“…Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!…”Luke 2:14
Ethiopia is the a home of mutual understanding, cooperation, respects, friendly behaviors, depth of tolerance and dynamism among the diverse cultural religion followers. These have, in fact, been the main driving forces of Ethiopian nationalism for a number of years.
In short, the multi-ethnic and multi-religious people of Ethiopia are always on cordial terms with each other coexisting within a peaceful environment. This is a matchless experience that has really made Ethiopia a symbol of religious tolerance, inter-communal integrations, which is frequently envied by many nations; we don’t get such exceptional relations among other religious people.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Church (EOTC) is one of the historical Christian Churches in the world. It was one of the founding members of the World Council of Churches and of the All Africa Conference of Churches. Approximately forty million Ethiopians are members of the EOTC, making it the largest active constituency in the Nation.
In addition to serving the spiritual needs of the population; the EOTC is actively involved in addressing economic, mental and psychosocial needs of the society like peace building and mutual respect with others.
The Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church has more than 35000 monasteries Parish Churches (Education centers) with nearly 500,000 peace makers (clergies) who have the daily interactions with their congregation. The Church runs three theological colleges, 43 clergy training centers. The EOTC counts a Sunday school enrollment of 6 million youths, ranging up to 25 years of age. This indicates there are significant opportunities to address the community on the issue of peace and inter cultural relations.
In Other hand, The EOTC’s infrastructure roots in society surpass those of the government, and the clergy has moral authority over society, is listened to, respected and accepted by the community. Thus it is capable of effecting significant behavioral change, provided it is properly equipped and trained.
For this matter we have tried to explain about peace and inter cultural and religious tolerance to create awareness on theological reflections of EOTC on peace and inter faith relations.

- Peace and Its theological definition
The word “peace” in the Bible, from the Greek word (eireinei), refers to a mental attitude of tranquility based on a relationship with God in the Christian Way of Life. It is a word which describes the result of a person’s correct response to God’s Grace. The Bible uses “peace” in two ways. There is personal peace with God which comes when a person belive and follow our lord Jesus Christ as Savior of the world, redeemer and peace of and light of the world . Then, there is the peace of God which is available on a daily basis as the believer participates in the Christian way of life according to the Plan of God.
So, where you find peace mentioned in the Bible it refers either to the reconciliation of a Christian in salvation, as in Eph. 2:14,17, or to the mental attitude found in the believers. When St Paul the apostle said “For God has not given us a spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind.” 2 Tim. 1:7 he reflects peace as a holistic wealth of humanity.
2.1 PEACE IN SALVATION (Grace of God)
Peace with God is never available apart from Grace. The Cross of Christ is the focal point of Grace and is the source of Peace. Jesus Christ is our eternal Peace. “Therefore, being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” Romans 5:1
Grace removed the Barrier and made peace between man and God. So, when the unbeliever responds to Grace by faith, the result is Peace.
Ephesians 2:14-18 provides a good illustration of how God made it possible for anyone to have peace with God, with special emphasis on the fact that such different types as Jews and Gentiles have been provided for. Verse 14 deals with peace as a product of reconciliation. Verse 15 explains that the “enmity” between God and man, that which we call the Barrier, was “abolished” once and for all. Verses 16 to 18 explain that the enmity has been slain for both Jews and Gentiles so that now those who were near to God, the Jews, and those who were far off, non-Jews, have been brought into union with Christ through the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
2.2 PEACE IN THE CHRISTIAN WAY OF LIFE
Christianity is the way of life with joy and peace always. St. Paul the apostle in his epistle to Hebrew said “ we cannot see God without faith and peace” Heb. 12:14. Without peace we cannot see also our brothers and sisters. In our lifetime we can experience Peace on a daily basis. When the believer responds by faith to Grace, God provides many blessings which can result in great inner happiness. According to the prophet’s of witness, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee; because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the Lord forever: for in the Lord God is everlasting strength.” Isaiah 26:3,4
In the Christian Way of life, peace comes through fellowship with God and daily growth, advancement in spiritual things which brings stability, a relaxed mental attitude, orientation to the plan and will of God, occupation with Christ, and the ability to employ faith-rest principles in all areas of life. Philippians 4:6-9
Peace precedes the enjoyment of kindness. It is part of the preparation for kindness and humbleness. One must have Peace to have the capacity for prosperity. God may hold prosperity back until there is the capacity to enjoy it. According to Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church Peace is the revelation of pure Christian life and it is a part of Christianity “Then had the churches rest throughout all Judea and Galilee and Samaria, and were edified; and walking in the fear of the Lord, and in the comfort of the Holy Spirit, were multiplied.” Acts 9:31
2.3 Peace: A fruit of the Spirit
“…What shall we say about such wonderful things as these? If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. Romans 8:31-39
Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? (As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.” No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.
- Holy Bible is an instrument of intr Religious Tolerance, Interfaith Harmony and Peace
There are many Biblical passages that promote inter religious tolerance, peace and social instruction of the society. We could find references in the Hebrew Scriptures (Old Testament) – and those were a prophecy about religious peace, at some undefined time in the future. There are also a handful of examples in the Christian Scriptures (New Testament). Most of them deal only with tolerance by one Christian to another.
Therefore, we can say that Holy Bible speaks more about inter religious tolerance, peace and interfaith harmony.
- Religion By it self is source and insrument of peace
Religion is a collection of cultural systems, belief systems, and worldviews that establishes symbols that relate humanity to spirituality and moral values. Many religions have narratives, symbols, traditions and sacred histories that are intended to give meaning to life or to explain the origin of life or the universe. They tend to derive morality, ethics, religious laws or a preferred lifestyle from their ideas about the cosmos and human nature.
The word religion is sometimes used interchangeably with faith or belief system, but religion differs from private belief in that it has a public aspect. Most religions have organized behaviors, including clerical hierarchies, a definition of what constitutes adherence or membership, congregations of laity, regular meetings or services for the purposes of veneration of a deity or for prayer, holy places (either natural or architectural), and/or scriptures. The practice of a religion may also include sermons, commemoration of the activities of worshiping, sacrifices, festivals, feasts, trance, initiations, funerary services, matrimonial services, meditation, music, art, dance, public service, or other aspects of human culture. Therefore, Religion may a source and instrument of peace if we use in a correct way.
- Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church’s teaching (Biblical Verses) on Peace
Ethiopian Orthodox Church has clear and understandable theological reflections on love and peace, peacefulness and joy. The church stands on the verses from the Holy Bible about peace in relation to God, our Lord God Jesus Christ, and the Christianity.
The church believes that When we need peace, God promises to provide a peace that passes understanding. The best thing we can do when we are filled with anxiety and worry is to find a quiet place to pray, read Scripture, and listen to encouraging worship hymens. God wants us to have a life lived to the fullest of holy spirit and that includes being at peace! To know how Holy Bible reflects peace, we can read the table listed below.

- Exemplary Histories in the Bible
According to Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahido Church’s teaching, Holy Bible has so many examplery histories and verses. Among these exemplary histories we can see the followings to understand the advantages of peace to live in this world with others in great intera and inter relations with great respect and mutual tolerance.
6.1 James: an example of peace
James sets a good example of this kind of peace. James was the brother of Jesus, a leader in the early church, and probably the author of the book of James (not to be confused with the apostle James, the son of Zebedee). When we review the book of Acts, the church was dealing with a serious question: “do Gentiles who convert to Christianity need to be circumcised, and do they need to observe the Law of Moses?”
There was a lot of debate on the issue The former Pharisees are sure the old law is necessary. But according to Peter, Jews and Gentiles are saved by grace, so why put the Gentiles under the rules that the Jews never could keep? (Ac 15:5–7).
James stands up and makes a call:
- The Gentiles don’t need to be circumcised or put under all the Mosaic customs
- They should abstain from certain foods and from sexual immorality.
This compromise sets everyone at peace again: the apostles are in agreement, and the story moves on. That’s a serious example of peace, folks. James handled a hot-button issue in a way that honored God and made peace in a heated debate. Imagine what it would be like if more of us followed James’ example. We’re not all church leaders, but we can follow the Spirit and look for ways to bring peace to those around us. James was a great man of the Spirit: patience When I think of patience, I think of how little of it I have when I get behind the steering wheel. But in patience isn’t just about waiting for time to go by. Galatians 5:22
It’s about putting up with hardship . . . for as long as it takes. James (the gentleman we just met) uses one famous character from the Old Testament as an example of patience . . .
6.2 Job: an example of patience
. . . And who better (Ja 5:11) even if we’ve not knowledge about Job, there’s a good chance you’ve heard of Job from anybody in any occasion. He is mostly an exemplary person of suffering and patience. “The patience of Job” is an example for a good reason and personality. Here’s an overview of his story:
- Job is a righteous (and very rich) man who worships God (Jo 1:1–3).
- Satan bets that Job will curse God if he loses everything (Jo 1:9–11, 2:4–5).
- Job loses everything, but his faith in God holds out (Jo 1:22, 2:10, 42:8).
This guy had patience. He wasn’t perfect. In fact, he flat out complains that God is afflicting him for no good reason at some points. But through it all, Job’s faith is in God—no matter what happens. Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo Church always prays for all Christians to lead us to the Spirit of patience like Job the just and patient one.
